Why the Cow

If you take a look at Nola’s logo, you’ll see a cow’s head. But it’s not just any cow - it’s a Swiss Brown cow, a true symbol of Swissness at its finest.

Swiss Brown cattle are tough, resilient, and incredibly versatile. They thrive in the steep, rugged terrain of the Alps, spending their summers grazing on spicy alpine herbs. These cows are known for their strength, adaptability, and endurance - qualities that perfectly align with Nola’s spirit of adventure and exploration.

But for me, this cow is more than just a symbol of Switzerland. It’s a personal connection to my grandfather’s childhood in the Graubünden mountains. Back in the 1920s and 30s, it was common for kids to attend school in winter and work on the farms in summer. My grandfather spent his summers herding animals in the Alps. As a kid, he started with goats and sheep, as he grew older, he took on the responsibility of looking after the cows.

Of course, being kids, he and his friends didn’t always take their job too seriously. Between their responsibilities, they explored, played, and tested their limits - as kids do. And at some point, someone had the idea: “Why not try riding a cow?” One time, my grandfather actually pulled it off - and there’s even a photo from the
summer 1933 to prove it.

This story is a fun family anecdote – and it represents the essence of Nola. The Swiss Brown cow embodies strength, endurance, and versatility, but it also carries a spirit of adventure, fun, and pushing boundaries. It’s a reminder that life - just like the outdoors - is about finding the balance between responsibility and having a great time.

These stories and experiences are woven into the fabric of Nola. The cow in our logo represents the Swiss heritage, the energy, and the versatility of these remarkable animals. It's a nod to the emotional connection and the joyful spirit of adventure that my grandfather embodied. Our logo-mascot is more than an image. It's a tribute to a way of life that values hard work, adaptability, and a
touch of playful curiosity.
